This catalog shows for the first time Bruce Nauman’s installation One Hundred Fish Fountain: 97 bronze fish attached to a steel frame and connected by numerous hoses to pumps, so that the fish suck in and spew out water at intervals. The fish as an iconographic term already appears in Nauman’s work with Fishing for an Asian Carp (1966). The freshwater fish represented in One Hundred Fish Fountain are all fish which Nauman used to catch together with his father, so that the biographical element also enters into this work and merges with the seductive and repugnant aspects into an icon of Nauman’s pictorial and mental universe.
