Dierk Maass’ photographs are imaginative as well as visual. For the passionate mountaineer the sensually tangible world remains a mere allusion to the essence, the many facets, the challenges and drama of life. Because he plays with light, his photography departs from pure contingency. Coincidence becomes meaningful premonition much as literature can receive meaningful expression due to the impact of one single word. Dierk Maass questions the terms of photographic perception. Yet his art transcends the didactics of applied theories of perception. Overexposure does not remain a technical error, but advances to a visual event that serves to disperse the present and localization of the picture.
