Family Files, Jüdisches Museum München
09.06. – 12.09.2010
Sixteen artists, sixteen families, sixteen »albums.« Each album encapsulates a family’s whole life. Before the viewer’s eyes, their private world unfolds, as seen through the artist’s lens. The cumulative effect is like embarking on a visual, anthropological journey to the heart of what family means, as the first point of reference in our lives. Instead of words, the artists use pictures to tell a story. Human bonds and aesthetic ties, anecdotes from the annals of family history, incidents and relationships: some are depicted in a vivid documentary style, others more as a fictional enactment.
The book Family Files – Contemporary Photography and Video Art from Israel provides a glimpse of contemporary Israeli photography and of video art that focuses on a dialogue with images of personal and collective memory.
