Its outstanding collection of Morocco pictures by Solothurn painter Frank Buchser (1828 – 1890) prompted the Kunstmuseum Solothurn to turn its attention to the rarely treated theme of Swiss 19th-century Orientalist painting in an overview of the works of various travelers to Africa. This catalogue accompanying the exhibition addresses the tension between homeland and foreign ground that has time and again preoccupied Swiss painters.
