Hanns Zischler
Nach der Natur · Camera Obscura

The actor, speaker and author Hanns Zischler has for years enjoyed prowling around outdoors with a Rigby pinhole camera in tow. The use of this historical technique, which requires long exposure times, allows him to lend unique expression to the constant motion found in nature. Since the middle of the film plane, lying directly opposite the aperture, cap tures more light particles than the borders, in the final image pulsating rays of light emanating from the bright, solar center grow darker as they disperse toward the edges. The »subjective camera« is close to the object, producing different effects depending on the interaction between sharpness and blurring and the imponderabilities of lighting conditions, and creating surprising color blends. The images develop remarkable poetic power from the resulting dynamic expression and glowing chromaticity.
For the author / photographer, it is a matter of outwitting and taming the flow of the moving elements of wind, wave and cloud by using immobile objects to capture a moment in time. »All will be revealed by the light of day.« said Adelbert von Chamisso. This maxim aptly describes Hanns Zischler’s work with the camera obscura.
