Selected title German Photo Book Award 2012
Over 50,000 women are diagnosed with breast cancer each year in Germany. For many, the diagnosis comes as a shock – along with the frightening prospect of losing one or both breasts. The 20 women in this book display for us in a joint photo shoot their unbroken joy in life, their strength, but also their vulnerability and melancholy. They are modern Amazons, who have no need, and certainly no desire, to hide themselves away.
Uta Melle, 40, found out two years ago that she had breast cancer, like her mother before her. Instead of passively surrendering to her fate, she launched this unique project.
Esther Haase is a noted fashion and portrait photographer who lives in Hamburg. Her last book was "Rock’n’Old" (Kehrer Verlag).
Jackie Hardt worked in front of the camera for many years before stepping behind it to take pictures herself, also specializing in fashion and portrait photography.
